Music taste is such a subjective thing but it’s so satisfying to discover new artists and tracks that you love. Some people find that their preferences fall into just one or two genres whereas others enjoy music from a wide variety of genres – I am definitely in the latter category! I think sometimes it can be a bit daunting discovering new music outside of the top 40 charts because there’s just so much out there! This post is a compilation of a number of perhaps lesser known Australian artists and songs that I have discovered over the past couple of years whose work I want to share with you (if you haven’t already come across some of them)! For each I have picked my favourite track and I hope that you will enjoy them too!
1. Jakubi – Couch Potato
I’m starting with Jakubi as they were the first Melbourne band I discovered after moving here 3 years ago (and can confirm, they are amazing live). Ironically, these guys are probably better known in the U.S. than in Australia having had sell out tours in the states. Jakubi are one of those upbeat poppy, soul, funk, hip hop bands that you don’t really know how to categorise properly – probably best to give their Couch Potato single a listen, it’s pretty great!
2. Sampa the Great – Blue Boss
I can literally listen to this song on repeat. And have done. I don’t really know what to say about Sampa the Great other than that I love everything she does, she’s a pure talent and fantastic live performer. Unfortunately there’s no video for this song so I’ve added the SoundCloud link.
3. D.D. Dumbo – Satan
There is no real way to describe D.D. Dumbo’s music, it has such a unique sound but is also really easy listening – well I think so anyway! Perhaps Sarah Smith from Rolling Stone put it best in describing his music as “world music and textured pop”. I think this quirky upbeat track is just great – have a listen and let me know what you think!
4. The Tesky Brothers – Pain and Misery
The Tesky Brothers are probably the most recent discovery on this list as I discovered them about a month ago at Meredith Music Festival in Melbourne – the vocals of Josh Teskey are astounding live (and recorded). They released their first album pretty quietly last year but it’s had a really positive reception and well worth a listen!
5. Jack River – Palo Alto
A friend put me on to Jack River whose music is probably best described as a indie-rock/pop. This track is another upbeat one that grew on me slowly at first but now is in a number of my regular playlists. Dream Girl is another track I love from this EP that’s quite different again and a close second place in picking a song for this post.
I hope you’ve enjoyed some of these artists/tracks. Feel free to share your thoughts below, I’d love to hear what you think! Also let me know if you have any favourite artists/tracks that you’d like to share! Xx
I loved Jakubi! I saw them live three years ago for a gold coin donation festival and was obsessed! I actually managed to catch them open for Rudimental on Sunday at The Australian Open, my last post is all about it if you’d like to have a read! xx
